Depending on your version of gparted, the disk may get clobbered; ayufan and I discovered that the best way to expand the filesystem on the disk is to use the script resize_rootfs.sh which uses gdisk. Once I got my eMMC loaded the script worked very nicely to expand the file system across the entire eMMC.
I also used the gdisk script to expand the SD card filesystem. My version of gparted caused numerous problems; I have abandoned it.
The reason for this is that the gpt is not on the back of the disk where gparted expects it; it will not continue unless you allow it to 'fix' the problem, and when it fixes the problem (for gparted) the gpt is now clobbered on the eMMC or the SD card.
