martinayotte's point is well stated, I try to stay away from the 'special use' pins if possible. The pins on the GPIO layout that are marked in green are safe, as are the pins in this case, marked in blue. I believe as long as the SPI (blue) and i2c (pink) are not being used they can be utilized as GPIO.
