I didn't have to use 'root'.
lsusb gave me several lines, including:
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 2c7c:0125 Quectel EG 25-G

sudo su is only for adb nad fastboot commands

that(Quectel EG 25-G) is what you want to see when running lsusb internally when serial/ssh'ed into the phone.
