Yes, "suspend" isn't working yet, so the best we can do is turn off the screen or shut down the device.
System Settings -> Power Management -> On Battery lets you adjust the time to screen dimming and off. I have found the default settings pretty suitable.
Side notes:
1. Locking the screen (Pine - L) seems to hamper the dimming, though it still turns the screen off after a while.
2. When the device has been shut down, it boots back up when plugged in to power. So I've been trying to plug it in *before* shutting it down.
