I tried with three different ones.
Looks like a defective board then. You might want to check if the microSD card detection pin broke off by looking from the side. Would suggest to open a ticket under https://support.pine64.org.

I solved the problem by lifting the pins.
The card reader works now and I can boot from SD.

I have this same problem. I figured it's a problem with the reader (i.e. the hardware), but haven't fixed it, yet. Support was no help.
@tux_life You "lifted the pins"? How? What did you do? This seems as if it maybe a solution for me, too.
