It was first introduced in October 1999 in iSeries 1460 and 1480 models, added to virtually all machines in lettered series (A, T, W, X, R, S, and Z series), and was last used in T430u released in August 2012, replaced at that point with backlit keyboard (though there were couple models that had both backlit keyboard and ThinkLight).
While I personally absolutely love ThinkLight, the screen bezel would likely need to be made thicker (as opposed to wider) to accommodate something like it, making the resulting laptop likely bulkier than is commonly accepted these days. Not that I personally have anything against bulk - my main laptop (including for travel) is a P51 ThinkPad, after all.
