The things we used to do by other means, but are now meant to 'Just Work' with NetworkManager...but 'Just Fail' with whatever GUI you're using, resulting in a disagreement between the interface and backend developers about who's doing it wrong. The WireGuard gui springs to mind with a parameter the backend requires, but the gui doesn't (or didn't) set, to to get the connection to actually work you have to set that one via the cli...
There's a man page example for nmcli that presumably shows how it's meant to work, but I haven't tried it so can't say it actually does. It's right at the bottom of the page:
