Raspberry or Pine?
#1
I'm in a doubt... Will I get a Pine A64 or a Raspberry pi 2 model B.

But first I have a few questions.
  1. Do you guys think that this community will become big enough to accomplish something similar?
  2. Will there be software / hardware compatibility with the Raspberry?
  3. How is the communication with Allwinner going?
  4. Are you working on (with) other Linux distros?
  5. Will there be 4k compatibility for these distros?
  6. Is there going to be a 'manual' on how to use this board?
Thank you

Hi there. I have a raspberry Pi 2 Model B and do think it's great. I have used it for a media machine and dual boot to a Linux learning device. It is brilliant for teaching me and my 5 year old daughter to code and basic electronics.

I am really looking forward to my pine64+ 2gb arriving as this will replace the media functions of the Pi and let me start using it (Pi) more for projects. I think they both have a place but suspect that for sheer horse power I will be a new pine convert!

  1. Do you guys think that this community will become big enough to accomplish something similar?
This is community effort, there are already few new areas that happen on Pine A64 such as micro server clustering, IoT gateway and etc.
  2. Will there be software / hardware compatibility with the Raspberry?
Some RPi HAT boards may able to work with Pine A64.
  3. How is the communication with Allwinner going?
We have active communication and constant email exchange with Allwinner folks.
  4. Are you working on (with) other Linux distros?
Due to limited resource, we focus on stock version Android bring up and lets community works on Linux. There are several Linux distros already on development.
  5. Will there be 4k compatibility for these distros?
Developing a good and stable Linux kernel for "headless" Linux build should be the initial focus. Eventually, there may be 4K compatibility in Lunix distros but takes time. If 4K is your main interest and concern, just use Android first.
  6. Is there going to be a 'manual' on how to use this board?
We constantly update Pine64 wiki, http://wiki.pine64.org.
