I updated last night after not touching things since I last posted. Things seem to be working again. I also switched off all the desktop effects in plasma settings and things are a lot smoother in terms of performance. Need more play time but feels stable again.

Hmmm I just updated and rebooted but no dice. When I rotate, the screen blinks so I think the sensor is OK. The screen won't rotate manually either AND if I try to set it to, say, 90 degrees it "takes it" but does nothing, but then it still shows a change if I were to do it again. The 0 degree entry stays as "no change" (apply button grey).
New piece of data:
There is a binding loop on the desktop when rotating. I wonder if everyone who has it working also has this:

(do a journalctl -f and then rotate the tablet).
I have a theory... the "empty dialog" I think is trying to confirm that the new screen rotation is OK and since it can't show the dialog it assumes the answer is No and reverts.
Now how to test and/or fix that?
Happy New Year All!!!
Has anyone found a solution to the virtual keyboard and the rotation problems. I have tried a few things with no success. Looking at other distros if I can't make this work.
Also, how do you turn off desktop effects? I have tried CTL+ALT+F12 and a few others. There used to be a button or checkbox in the Plasma setup screens, but after one of the updates it disappeared or moved to an unknow loacation.
Any help would be appreciated.

I am in the same boat. I got pretty far on troubleshooting but no answer and haven't had time to work on it lately.
Pushed this back on the Pinetab earlier in the week after trying the minimalist method which worked but then lacked "things" . SO reinstalled again. Works a treat - especially with effects turned off. Rotation took a little messing with but sorted. No virtual keyboard but that was expected.
Will keep this on the device for a while to make some more tests and dare I say it - use it with the hope to start (gasp!) enjoying it
1 Now with Pinephone Pro (used to have Pinephone and Pinetab) cooking on Mobian - Seasoned Ubuntu user since 2007
2 Known to break things - often
3 Sometimes known to fix things then see 2 above
Can you elaborate on how you got rotation to work?
I too, would like to get rotation working. trying to use the keyboard in portrait mode is a pain, and with no virtual keyboard and no rotation to landscape, it is nearly unusable.

With Plasma 5.22 and the installation of maliit-keyboard the virtual keyboard is back once more. However only for KDE apps so far or at least Firefox didn't want it.
