Nothing special I think, boot from sd card, download the image. unzip.
sudo dd if=whatever.img of=/dev/mmcblkblah bs=1M status=progress
let it copy, power off computer, take sd out, power on and it should boot from emmc.

I see, thank you!
Let me ask you how important is the proper block size in DD? For some of the IMG-s I saw even 16MB as a block size, thought sometimes I see 1M or even less.
Just out of curiosity. Can I ruin an IMG on my SD selecting a wrong BS?
EDIT:
Again I could not boot from the eMMC, so I went ahead and installed Bionic MATE and to my honest surprise it worked!
Now I see bunch of issues here or there like very annoying screen flickering, but with that I'll check the other threads. Thanks for the help!

let it copy, power off computer, take sd out, power on and it should boot from emmc. I'll try that next time. But first I'd need to get it to boot something, anything at all. Right now it doesn't boot eiter eMMS or SD-card.

Just put your eMMC on it, stick it in you desktop and use Etcher to flash the image. Put it back in the PBP et voila...
