RockPro64 power consumption

Hey guys, those Rockchip-based boards sound insane!

I'm thinking about getting my hands on one of the RockPro64-Boards, but I'm a bit curious about the power consumption (idle mostly).
Could anyone of you please share some concrete power consumption values like for the Rock64-board in the youtube-videos here?

Does the RockPro64-board have the same frequency steps as the Rock64, leading to a similar idle power consumption, or is there something else to consider?

Yup - what you plug in ti the PCIe slot and/or USB and/or VIN header. Pretty sure it is possible to construct a scenario that could overload the 5A (60W) suggested PSU.

OTOH I have nothing in my PCIe (yet) and only a BT dongle in USB. Measuring my power consumption at the wall (with a Brennenstuhl meter) 7.25W max when idle, often a lot less, and 12W or so with all 6 CPU cores close to 100% (but no GPU load). Dont think my PSU is very efficient, maybe 70%. I am running HDMI screen, 4.4.132 kernel.

OK, just reworked my power supply and did some measurements on the input DC line, which I measured at 12.2V:

0.185A minimum (HDMI plugged in but DPMS screen saver in effect, nothing in USB sockets or PCIe), all CPU idle (at 408MHz)
0.19A if add Bluetooth dongle to USB
0.21A if wake up display (Openbox desktop), also BT dongle
0.65A all CPU at 100% load (not very demanding load but does make 100% at 1416 & 1800MHz), screen alive (Openbox desktop) but no real GPU load
  • ROCKPro64 v2.1 2GB, 16Gb eMMC for rootfs, SX8200Pro 512GB NVMe for /home, HDMI video & sound, Bluetooth keyboard & mouse. Arch (6.2 kernel, Openbox desktop) for general purpose daily PC.

My results, measured at the mains line, with a no-name switched-mode 12V/3A PSU,  a 64 GB eMMC module installed, and a HDMI HD TV + a USB keyboard + a USB mouse plugged in:
  • screen off past 10 min timeout: 3.1 W
  • while I am typing this post on it: 3.5 W
  • watching 1080p film fullscreen: 6–9 W (varies)
  • with 6 threads of burnCortexA9: 11 W
Bottom line is that it's considerably less power-hungry than the ODROID-XU4 (about 15 W maximum) Wink

What's the explanation for the discrepancy between the two idle values?

I'm looking to build a power-efficient NAS on basis of a RockPro64. But since the NAS would sit idle for most of the time, power consumption during Idle state is of the main concern for me.

There isn't such a big discrepancy:

So the power drawn from the output of the PSU is 0.185 × 12.2 = 2.257 W, but if you divide it to the PSU efficiency (say, 0.75, albeit it varies) and add the consumption of the keyboard and the mouse (however small they are), you get close to my 3.1 W (2.257 / 0.75 ≈ 3).

I did draft a reply yesterday but plainly blew it when it came to posting! But yup, gist was PSU efficiency. I am quite sure the PSU I was using at first was not efficient in any way (except at finally expiring - it was about 20 years old).

As per lucho my new numbers measured on the 12V supply are in line with as his at the wall.

Hi
I have both 4GB ROCKPro64 and 4GB Rock64. I have to use both in a wireless kind of environment or locations where grid electricity is not there.
I have tried Rock64 with Portable power bank giving 2.1A current using USB to 3.5mm OD/1.35mm cable and it worked well.

I was wondering what minimum power i can give to RockPro64 without damaging it ? Most commercial power banks gives 2.1 A current with 5V USB cable. I have searched Amazon and could see some portable power banks with variable current options higher than 2.1 A but indeed they are expensive. Giving higher current using USB cable is fine .. ? Please advise what should i do to make ROCKPro64 portable.
If someone can recommend a solar power charger that can work, that will be an added advantage ... All green energy setup Big Grin
