[Archived] ANNOUNCING RECALBOX FOR THE ROCK64 - ALPHA RELEASE

I haven't done anything besides add more games for various systems and leave the ROCK64 on for a while. I was booting it and then immediately opening the game before while this time I've been leaving it on overnight. That's the only thing I can think of, nothing else has changed.

With that the system is working perfectly! Thank you so much for your hard work, I'm thrilled that I can play all my retro games in the living room now.

Wonder what the issue was... hmmm. Lets see if Danielsan's issue resolves itself too after a reflash.
Also, don't get too used to your current build - at least not until beta ;Wink Alpha V2 is already in the works, and it solves many current issues.

A couple of issues popped up:

The splash animation on boot does not resize or at least center on 4K displays (super minor)
PSP games - at least the two I've tested - do not work. Selecting them goes to a black screen for about 3 seconds then it jumps back to the game list.

Thanks. Yep, the animations are designed for smaller resolutions than 4k. As far as I understand, nothing we can do on our end.

And yes, PSP doesn't work ... yet. Probably wont work in the next alpha image either, as right now lower level stuff takes priority.

The three systems that don't work are:
  • Amstrad
  • Dreamcast
  • PSP

Hi Luke,

I had time to reflash and to do a new test.

First thing the wifi doesn't work, mine is the one available from the store, I can't see any networks but actually I did not understand If I have to add the ssid network manually.

PSX works fine, It is not depend by the act of reflashing but just because I deactivate the shaders. With the two shaders available the performance drops down dramatically and there are a lot of graphic glitches.

Respect the N64 the emulation is not constant, and it is not possible going to the retroarch menu, maybe because is not a libretro core... The combination to go on the retroarch menu seems like to save a live game snapshot that you can recall with another combination, I have not idea if this feature is the cause of some bad performance.

The graphic of 32-bit and lower systems does not play nicely with the HDTV, I would like to know if it is possible activate an overlay effect like in Lakka. Shaders seem to work at pixel level however I dislike the final result, some overlay filter gave me the impression to be more realistic and, bottom line, have very few impact on the general performance.

I am gonna upload the logs again when I collect some hour mores of gaming.

Hi Danielsan,

Yes, shades definitely need to be optimized for the platform. The stock ones result in bad performance - but there are quite a few that both look and perform well (I am particularly fond of LCDx3 and gamma 125 // scanlines ... can't remember the exact names by heart, will check later end edit this post). If you press your hotkey combination in-game, it will bring up rgui. Goto quick menu, shaders, add a pass and select the shader you like. Then save as core/ game default.

Yes, the stock n64 emulator + plugin is mupen and libretro. You can change it to libretro in advanced setting -> emulator settings -> libretro (select the core too).

Regarding WiFi, will be added in either alpha 2 or 3. Some other dongles already work.

Hi Luke,

shaders and overlays are not exactly the same thing. However I found the wiki for the latter, it is not easy to setup as Lakka but it's neither impossible...

I do realize that :Smile Regardless, working towards alpha v2 I have now found a set of shaders that work well on the R64 and look exactly the same as the ones included with stock Recalbox. You can just set up whatever you want in Retroarch entering RGUI by pressing hotkey combination.

I anticipate with the overlay activated PSX emulation is harming but N64 is still fine (at least with the default emulator). Later I am going to provide the logs. As the frame overlay shown 60 but the animation is jerky, I believe the problem are in the frames dropped down... By the way it was a bit surprising to see this issue just because a simple overlay.

Quick update. We've done a lot of progress. So much so that we'll skip Alpha V2 altogether and go for near-feature complete beta.
But to do this I need (at least) 2 people to do a proper all-around beta test and offer complete feedback. This would include, testing all emulators (even those you don't intend do play), different peripherals, settings, etc.,
Two volunteers will do.
