Ubuntu Release Upgrade (16.04 => 16.10 => 17.04) working

Smile
I just played around with the ubuntu release upgrade which does not want to start due to insufficient space in "/boot" reported (asking for 40MB more).

Out of curiosity I booted from SD card and increased the boot partition of the integrated eMMC with "gparted" (shrink ext4 partition by 50 MB and move to right, expand boot partition by 50 MB).

Later I was able to do a release upgrade of ubuntu using the standard commands.

It took quite a while. But 2 hours and one reboot later I had Ubuntu 16.10 running on my pinebook.
The kernel itself was NOT updated (/boot stayed 100% same).

No problems so far with Ubuntu 16.10 and the old 3.10 kernel. All seems to work as expected.

So increasing the /boot partition by 40 MB seems to do the trick (even that it is not used).

Will try 17.04 upgrade next.

Just did another upgrade to 17.04. It took much longer to upgrade but it is also running ok.

Did these upgrades to 16.10 and 17.04 enable you to run java?
On 16.04 (the default for PineBooks delivered in late June) java fails. Simple commands like "java -version" produce a core dump, and of course no java application runs.

Also the old 16.04 can run java on pinebook fine. I updated to one of ayufan latest images before and on 0.5.5 or newer java is working.

I am currently attempting this.  Resized boot to 100mb.  Update to 16.10 is running right now.

I have updated to 17.04. Main issue I have seen so far is that it says there are no bluetooth adaptors available. not sure if there is a fix for this.

Dear guys, I have upgraded ubuntu from 16.04 to 17.04 just the first day with no problem, but also had a problem with bluetooth then, so I could not use my mouse. The developers told that only 16.04 is supported, because it contains some hacks, maybe also special kernel etc. So it is not so easy to upgrade it and get it working like before.

This is why I rather installed Android 7.1 on my PB and will try to play with Linux on my new SD card after it arrives.

Oh, and it was not necessary to resize anything. Just used "apt update" and "apt upgrade" instead of "apt-get update" and "apt-get dist-upgrade".

i have no need for bluetooth at this point, just something i noticed.  I figured 16.04 was the supported version.  thanks for the info.

I also noticed a lack of bluetooth, which wasn't a huge deal but I am using a bluetooth speaker with it. I just use the cord for now. Have not used it in android yet as I have been sticking with linux and am running android on my pine64.

Did you guys check if the BT module loads ? If not. then try modprobe the BT driver. I haven't updated to 17.04, and probably won't so cant check.
You can find me on IRC, Discord and Twitter

I may check it, do you know the exact module name?

I think btusb is standard, but I don't know if it's the same on these.
