New to the Pine64 : Distro recommendation

I am new to the world of one board computer and the Pine64 is my first experience.

I have purchase a 1GB and a 2GB model with one Wifi board.

I have put small heatsinks on both processor

Using the linux dd command, I successfully burned a RemixOs on a 16GB  class 10 micro-SD card and I am able to boot busing my HDMI TV

But they are is very slow.  Much slower than expected.


I am looking for a suggestion for another distribution that would be faster (more responsive) than RemixOs.

hi, the answer to your question depends what you mean by very slow.

... if you mean video latency (video fps response, as a media or gaming center) this is a known problem which is being addressed now; its not quite there yet.

Let me answer your question this way; I am using my PineA64 as my normal standard desk PC now for more than 10 weeks--- most of this summer (debian mate). It is VERY responsive and handles my day to day tasks very well--- honestly.

On the other hand, folks trying to use the PineA64 board as a media center appliance are having some issues; mostly related to the video. Also, some are having ethernet issues (speeds of 1 GbE) which is also being addressed now, but which so far do not have solid solutions (it will get there, just not there yet).

So, the question is, what do you want to use your PineA64 for; why did you purchase it, and what were your expectations?

The Remix OS looks great however, there is a 5-10 second delay when I click on an icon.  Once in an application, it seems to run fine.

So far I have only tried benchmark programs  (Antutu, 3dMark and PCMArk).  I knew that the Pine64 would not be as fast as my smartphone, but the 5-10 sec lag is annoying and I simply want to setup another sd-card with the fastest distribution possible

I have two project but my first goal is to tinker with these

Project #1  I would like to benchmark my Pine64 against two old laptop that I have 
Project #2  I want to build a Kodi box to replace an old Optiplex Dell computer that Iis running Kodi right now
Project #3  I want to setup a headless board running a proxy running "No Track"  http://quidsup.net/notrack/

Test the SD card for 4kb iops performance. I recommend the Samsung EVO SD cards.

Sandisk make more than one class 10 card, so I have no idea, but in my experience, the Samsung is noticably faster than the Sandisk cards I've tried, which is why I recommend it.

The class is about the minimum sequential ransfer rate, which is pretty much irrelevant, since that's not a typical usage pattern for an OS, and you'll saturate at about 23MB/s on the Pine64 anyway.
