I did take off the keyboard because it repeatedly would not charge the PinePhone Pro battery. Perhaps a good quality shim would fix this, but my one try did not succeed.

Now it seems that higher voltage chargers will not work with keyboard charging. Switching to an older slower charger has made the keyboard useful.
I guess you mean higher current (amperage) / power (wattage)? The voltage (tension) should always be 5V, everything else will certainly not work.
What Ampere (current) or Watt (power) rating worked and what did not, so that we get an idea of what the maximum could be, approximately?
The fix was only temporary. I have retired the keyboard in favor of an XIT folding Bluetooth keyboard when it is needed.
