It depends on how much power the SSD is using. There are ways to limit the power using the nvme command. I think in my case it's about a couple hours of use time.
Some more thoughts: https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?...3#pid83373 Since that time I've also converted it to the f2fs file system, I don't see any improvement over ext4 in benchmarks or otherwise but it's been quite stable and resilient to corruption so I'm not rushing to change back. I keep the boot partition in the emmc, like you propose in the OP.

Loosing a couple of hours seems like a shame. One of the things I love about this laptop is its long battery life. Is there any risk of wearing out the built in eMMC drive? I just had an SSD failure on my work Lenovo T470. Having only /boot on the eMMC means that it's never going to wear out I guess. interesting article on SSDs and battery life here https://www.tweaktown.com/articles/8856/...index.html
Why I still keep using the SSD:
I wouldn't be concerned about the longevity of the eMMC, it's perfectly useable and faster than an SD card. I have some other tablets that have eMMC storage and they have lasted for years. It's also not soldered on, Pine 64 sell the modules separately and you can replace them very easily if it should fail. |
