Is it possible to connect the pine to a computer the same way you do a phone or tablet? I really need to try to root the Android image that way. None of the root apk's working.

Sort of. You can user a Serial cable and connect it to the Pine just like a PI. It will give you console access to the system but I dont know how that will work with android. Damng it now I have to try just to see. Thanks Tarjei will get back to you shortly with an answer.
Ok so here is what I have found. Yes android does output on the serial conector just like its big brother linux. Yes once done booting you are are a command line. No, I am unable to find any way to use adb (and therefore most automated rooting tools) over serial like this. You can access the command line and possibly enable wifi/ethernet adb as mentioned here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/26047...b-over-tcp I have a 2gb model and no sign android likes my wifi adapter. Here is the device I am using to connect to the Pine serially. http://www.ebay.com/itm/FT232RL-3-3V-5-5...SwMmBVnpBy set to 3.3v and connected as in this photo; http://i.imgur.com/HLpyiOp.jpg the settings for the port in windows device manager are 115200 8-n-1. Using putty to connect BTW it looks like based on the results from my SU command that things may be closer to root than you think; http://pastebin.com/yY8u7Ank last couple lines. This is the full boot log but as you can see when I issu SU there is no password challenge and it appears to give access. Ok to me it looks like we have root, just not the usual root apps like busybox and Superuser.apk. Here is what I was able to do, I dont reccommend this as a working solution because all I have done is copy the files over which may be wayyy old for the version of android we are on. Also keep in mind when I typed su I was given root. I used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthre...?t=2684210 insturctions. With the following changes I extracted su, busybox, Superuser.apk from the zip, as I said these files are probably old. you will have to find ones right for this version of android. I placed those files on a usb flash drive. I plugged that into the pine. On the pine console I switched to SU. I remounted /system RW using the following command; mount -o rw,remount /system After which I coped su and busybox to /system/bin I then copied the Superuser.apk to /system/app So everything was easy to put into place. Good luck! Keep in mind though as I have said, su is already there and working. It could be as simple as copying the Superuser.apk and perhaps find an Busybox.apk to install that.
Thank you very much.
Feeling like an idiot here I'm not able to get the SU in console/terminal (not shure what you mean about Pine console, couldnt find any, so I downloaded both terminal emulator and termux) For the record I'm on he newest android rom from the wiki page.

If you can get any of the Android ssh apps to work like Juice and connect to the ip of the Pine from that app running on the pine you should have the same abilities I just had over the serial cable.
