Possible to get 4K resolution on Linux desktop?
#1
So I finally got my first PINE 2GB setup with Home Assistant doing all the cool stuff I wanted it for, and am really happy with it.  I'm now in need of a small form factor system that can run Linux (distro unimportant) with a 4K resolution on the desktop (DE also unimportant).

It will be used as a camera viewing station, either pulling directly from my Unifi Video webpage showing 4-6 camera feeds, or I will use some software to pull 4-6 RTSP feeds.  Either way, I want a 4K resolution to use with a 27" 4K monitor.

Would total be interested in buying another PINE if it could handle this.  My preference would be running DietPi (Debian 8 based) with OpenBox, but could run LXDE or XFCE.  Would use Chrome/Chromium as the browser if I went with viewing from the UniFi Video webUI, and undecided on the RTSP software I'd use.

Thoughts?

It supports the resolution 1920x1080p60 and will look great on your 27" monitor;  however, hardware acceleration is absent, and it will be slow.

If you want video, use android.

Thanks Mark. Looking more and more that I will need to grab a NUC to do what I want.

Has there been any update on hardware acceleration? I broke out my Pine A64 2GB again, loaded up DietPi with LXDE, and am having performance issues with vlc trying to play 1 480p RTSP stream. Kinda disappointing, really.

Should I expect better performance with Android/RemixOS? Ubuntu?

In a nutshell: Android (particularly ayufan's droid 6) and RemixOS will be smooth. Linux not so much. I'm not sure about 4k tho ...

Thanks for the updates.  The 4k idea has kinda died, at least at the moment.  The monitor I ended up using is only 1080p, and I still have only 1 rtsp feed I care about.  Originally there was going to be 4-6 feeds, each running at 720p resolution and wanting to have them all displayed on a 4k monitor.  For not, not the case.

I've no experience with RemixOS.  Would it be easier to set up (and maintain) automation to auto-login, launch VLC, and connect a rtsp feed at boot?  With linux, this was easy with a little bash script.
