It turns out that the SIM card from the iphone was just really old. I made a trip to the verizon store, where they transfered my phone number to a new SIM card, which works in the pinephone. I'm marking this thread as solved. Thanks everyone for helping me trouble shoot.
As a side note, the verizon store clerk had to activate the new SIM card using a third phone, since the activation sequence wouldn't recognize the pinephone. Or, at least we weren't able to find a way activate it in the pinephone.
