Any ideas?

  Need a new microphone?
Posted by: kujo_marble - 08-16-2022, 08:26 PM - Forum: PinePhone Hardware - No Replies

I've got a Pinephone that is giving me some trouble. The microphone has caused problems since I got it, causing staticy noise and making my voice unrecognizable. Now, it completely fails to pick up anything-- complete silence. I want to A/B test using bluetooth or plugin headphones, but with every OS, nothing shows up when scanning for Bluetooth devices. The issue with the mic also goes across all OSes. This strikes me as broken hardware. Opinions?

  Suggested software for use case
Posted by: ehcorn - 08-16-2022, 07:48 PM - Forum: General Discussion on Pinebook Pro - Replies (4)

Hi all, I just got my pinebook pro and it’s really interesting, but I’ve run into some issues installing software I had intended to use. I’m planning on using this for mobile writing and I need a reference manager and writer installed. I usually use zotero but it’s missing arm64 support, I also use obsidian and zettlr which both have arm64 app images I can use but app images seem less “good” than a full install but I don’t really know better or much about them!

I’ve finally managed to get twisterOS running on the SD card and honestly it feels pretty fast but the ram footprint is huge though it could be that it’s running from ram because it feels really fast.

I’m looking for suggestions on what I should install for software and systems, I need word processing so I’m thinking libre office but is it worth my time to fudge around with Debian systems? I’m more familiar with Debian based Linux but manjaro is what mine came with and it seems to work fairly well but I can’t run zotero or mendeley as a second choice.

Lastly, to get twisterOS to boot from the SD card I have to go in and switch off the EMMC and then hold power for 20 seconds every time I boot and as far as I can tell this is something called a uboot issue but I’ve been unable to find a clear answer.

Lastly, since I’m looking for lightweight and efficient and I’m not afraid to learn and try new things, I’m tempted by i3/sway but I haven’t found a good resource for learning that either yet.

Exclamation Impossible to minimize a window with Phosh
Posted by: anonymous - 08-16-2022, 03:07 PM - Forum: Mobian on PinePhone - Replies (7)

Hello

Since the latest update today, I can't minimize a window in Phosh. It drives the Pinephone very difficult to use. I don't even know a shortcut to minimize the current window. The widget in the bottom no longer works Sad

Do you know a solution or a workaround?

Advise: ENABLE animations before updating phosh! Otherwise freezes and crashes!
Posted by: dante404 - 08-16-2022, 01:06 PM - Forum: PinePhone Software - Replies (5)

My PinePhone became nearly unusable after apt upgrade today (mobian), because new phosh freezes and then crashes all the time IF you have disabled animations in phosh!

So if you have disabled them in the past (like I did), beware! Enable before updating!  Wink

  setting permissions on gpio

Is there a way to set permissions on the gpio pins so you don't have to be a root user to use the pins?

Phone will not turn on (but sometimes will)
Posted by: insidetrip101 - 08-16-2022, 08:25 AM - Forum: PinePhone Hardware - Replies (10)

First, let me explain what has happened. I have had my pinephone (not pro, this one https://pine64.com/product/pinephone-bet...e-package/) for almost a year. Most of that time I haven't used it. About 3 weeks ago, I brought it back out of storage because I wanted to play around with it again. It still had the manjaro kde-plasma default install on it. Took an upgrade to get it actually functional, but no big deal (although it was rather clunky and laggy, but its a pinephone).

About a week ago, it crashed, and I tried to reboot it (I think it was the same screen that I'll mention below, but I can't remember for sure). However, the phone would not reboot. The led would come on (i.e. a mixture of green/yellow/red, and depending on the angle you're can isolate each color of the led), the screen never turned on, and I never got the vibrate that has accompanied the phone when it turns on. I messed with it for a couple hours, decided I needed to get off of the garbage factory install, and planned to install a new os.

Two days ago, I tried it again, just to see what would happen. . . and it turned on. So I'm thinking, oh, it was never a problem to begin with. However, yesterday morning I try to turn it on and . . . it doesn't turn on. I fought with it most of the day yesterday and couldn't turn it on. Spend several hours on the irc chat with no results (trying to install manjaro phosh, but the phone wouldn't boot at all). So I gave up and went to work out.

When I came back last night I COULD TURN ON MY PHONE AGAIN. In fact, I was actually able to install manjaro phosh. I couldn't make calls or send texts like I could with the factory install, but I had to mess with the settings on the factory install to get calls, texts, and data working too. However, after about a half hour or so the phone crashed (i.e. the screen mentioned earlier). The screen turned mostly white but had these very thin, fine black vertical lines. I tried to turn the phone off and back on again, but it won't turn on. I haven't been able to get the phone turned on since, but I'm sure it'll work here shortly. . .

Here is what I've tried, both through my efforts and the irc:

1) I have a pinephone (not pro) https://pine64.com/product/pinephone-bet...e-package/
2) I've tried charging it through my computer and a 5v/2.4 amp charger (this charger has been working in the past, but maybe something happened?)
3) I've installed a new distribution (manjaro phosh https://github.com/manjaro-pinephone/pho...a24.img.xz is the image I installed)
4) I've begun to take the phone apart to look for loose connections. I did think to use a multimeter on the battery. The battery is outputing 3.63 volts (says its rated for 3.8) so maybe the battery is dead? But if that were the case, then why won't the phone boot up when connected to the wall without the battery?
5) when I plug the battery in and check the contacts opposing the battery on the phone, I'm still getting 3.63 volts on the battery. It does indeed appear to me that when plugged in the phone does not charge at all, but I have absolutely no clue why.
6) I have created an SSD with pine64-pinephone-charging.img.xz. Apparnetly, this image isn't for booting, but only for allowing your phone to charge. The led is supposed to turn red when the battery is under 5%, yellow when its >5% but <%50, and green when >%50. However, when I put the charging image sd card in and then plug the phone to a charger (I have used several different chargers and my computer, none of them works) in the led does not come on. I cannot get the led to come on by pushing the power button (when the charging sd card is inserted). The led will come on (as described above) when I take out the charging image sd card and either try to power on or plug into a charger.

What am I missing? The fact that the phone will work after sitting idle for an unspecified time (but not all the time, because I let it sit overnight) tells me that there's some issue with it, but it potentially remains functional. I have not seen any loose connections from taking it apart, but I could be missing something (if someone would have a better idea of where to check). I'm going to do another visual inspection tonight when I get home from work.

Anyway, thank you for any help that anyone has to give. I'm at a loss at the moment. Sorry if I'm too detailed here, but since the problem seems nebulous I figure no fact can be determined to be irrelevant at this point.

Error trying to update Manjaro software

Hello. I receive the following error while trying to update software in Manjaro using Add/Remove Software:

If anyone is able to advise I’d be grateful. I’m pretty inexperienced when it comes to Linux.

  Debian emmc installer
Posted by: db579 - 08-15-2022, 09:15 AM - Forum: Linux on Pinebook Pro - Replies (6)

I'm trying to install Debian on the emmc. I've tried building an image from the firmware and partition images here https://deb.debian.org/debian/dists/bull...rd-images/ and here https://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/arm6...rd-images/.

In both cases no network interfaces are detected at all and it appears wifi drivers are missing, meaning I can't complete the install.

Is it expected that those images don't contain the driver? (I thought the netboot spin included non-free?). What is the best way of getting that driver? Is there another image I should be using?

  Doorbell camera
Posted by: zoof - 08-15-2022, 07:40 AM - Forum: General - No Replies

Have the Pine team thought about designing a doorbell camera that can store images in the not-cloud?  Ring et al seem like horrible, privacy destroying options.  A device that is fully under the owner's control would be amazing!
