Your uses for the PineBook

What do you use your Pinebook for? Is it to satisfy your curiosity for running different distributions of Linux or Android on a desktop. Is it your Daily Driver? Do you just use it take it to class and write notes? Do you just want to have something you can brag about spending around $100 USD and actually works? What software do you use daily?
Me?
I'm starting to use this as a daily driver for the light stuff. I do most my personal computing sitting on the bed because that is the quietest room in the house but I'm not allowed to have a desk in that room. Firing up the Pinebook with no cables is a lot easier than plugging in my new 17 inch gaming laptop. No cables means I can move things around without worrying about dragging something off to the floor. If I want to do something seriously power hungry like Second Life or Rocket League I will put up with the cables but for my daily activities this Pinebook is fine.
I use it for most of my web browsing. I play an online web game and there are a few publicly available extensions for Chrome I use. Since these extensions aren't available in the Chrome Store I have to delete and re-add the extensions on my Gaming laptop. Chromium doesn't have the Chrome Store requirement so firing up the Pinebook to play my game is a lot faster.
I use the original Ubuntu MATE desktop. I know they say there are other desktops that are faster but after recently retiring a 5 year old Windows 10 laptop this desktop works great.
I have started doing some of my Genealogical research using the PineBook and have GRAMPS installed. It works just fine on this 16GB EMMC powered arm processor. I can even print my worksheets on the wireless HP printer downstairs.
I just loaded GNUCASH. I'm going to try and keep the checkbook balanced and GNUCASH works just fine so far. I'll try connecting to the bank using OFX tonight but the QIF file I downloaded the other night loaded just fine.
I'm playing with some Programming utilities like GLADE and GEANY. My programming project isn't terribly large right now and this tiny processor has no problems.
The only problems I have with MATE right now is trying to resize windows. The window borders are really fine lines and trying to grab it to extend one edge of the window takes a lot of patience. I should just maximize each window on it's own screen and just switch between desktops.

How to upgrade

Hi,
I have installed xenial-mate-rock64-0.5.14-133-arm64.img.xz on my eMMC. I just want to upgrade to a newer release, for example 0.5.15 build-rock-64-136.
With
Code: sudo apt-get update -y
sudo apt-get install linux-rock64 -y
I get "linux-rock64 is already the newest version (0.5.14)."
What I'm doing wrong?
Michael

Configuring Python GPIO Pin Control Rock64

I haven't had experience working with GPIO but it appears I need to find a Python GPIO pin library to control the GPIO pins on the Rock64 for the project I'm developing. What libraries do you (the community) think I should use for GPIO pin control on my Rock64? Depending on standardization, it seems a library should be on the documentation page for the board.
Thank you.

Astroimaging Control

Hi - I've just come across the Rock64 board. I'm interesting in trying to get this to work to control astroimaging equipment (mainly in my back garden). I've been using the Raspberry Pi for this, but many of the newer cameras use USB 3, so would be great to get this working on the Rock64.
I think to make this work, I'd either need to get VirtualHere working, which requires USBIP, or be able to run 32 bit applications so that I can use the application which works on the Pi.
Has anyone had success in getting USBIP and/or 32 bit applications to work?
Thank you very much,
Colin

Hi All,
First time poster here but have been lurking for a while.
I have just taken delivery of two Pine 64 LTS 2GB boards and I have a question. What memory do I need to buy for them? My plan is to install android and I want as much performance as possible.
I had hoped it would become obvious once I saw the hardware but I am still uncertain so any advice would be depreciated.
Thanks!
Jon

Rock64 as HTPC

Hi,
i bought myself the rock64 to use it as a HTPC. Currently I have not yet found the optimal solution. Basically there is not much I wish to achieve:
- Use Netflix (720p would be ok)
- Stream Webradios and Youtube
- Stream some German TV stations over internet (either app or in browser)
- Stream video/photos from my NAS
- Daily-use-compatible power button
Here are the problems I discovered so far:
Android TV:
- works basically but not much apps installable
- netflix not listed in playstore
- Tried an apk for netflix for android I found on some websites. They get installed but when I open I receive an error message: "your device not compatible... blabla"
- I can install "normal" netflix app as an apk file. That can also stream video, but as soon as the navigation bar disappears I can not bring it back. I can not pause the stream or jump to any position because the navigation bar does not reappear.
LibreElec:
Installs fine, works good but the current available Version (krypton) does not yet support Netflix. Raybuntus repository (https://github.com/Raybuntu/LibreELEC.tv/releases/) holds releases with the next version (leia) but they are not yet available for rock64.
Ubuntu Mate:
Installs fine, works good, but chrome is not available for the platform and Firefox is not supported for Netflix on this platform ==> no netflix streaming
Android stock:
Installs fine, works but input with mouse/keyboard sometimes is difficult. But I could live with that.
Again: Netflix is not available on playstore but can be installed from apk. But I get the same problem as described in section Android TV. Navigation bar disappears...
Power button:
I think the way to go here is to add a switch of my choice with some extra cable to the same pins as the current power button. As I'm not an electronic engineer I fear the soldering of these tiny pins. Is there any other way to go?
Which setup do you guys use? Have you encountered the same or further issues? Is there a way to fix the issues described above?
Looking forward to your replies.
