I have had success installing gajim, but you need to first create a valid XMPP account with a server such as jabber.today.

And your contacts must also have an XMPP account ID (username@[xmpp-domain]) but they don't have to be using gajim; they can using any number of clients on Desktops, or Android/iOS devices. Too bad it's so complicated. Sad
