Hello savants,
After reinstalling "Factory Reset KDE Neon" on my Pinebook 1080P (it crashed in the middle of updating) I was in the middle of updating applications when the computer starting freezing every 5-10 minutes, requiring me to shut the system down by long-pressing the power button and pressing it again.
I found a thread in this forum tracing similar behavior back to Firefox (https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=7690) so I removed the setting that autoloaded Firefox when KDE Neon loads ( per https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=6443 page 3). I have tried working carefully without Firefox running, and the system still freezes.
My only major adjustments to the system's operation have been to enable it to start up without prompting for username/password, and enlarging the default font.
Any ideas what might be causing this behavior?
Thanks in advance, R.M.

Is there any errors in /var/log/syslog? or any if you run dmesg?
I had freezes every 5-10 minutes. For mine pinebook, it helped to turn off sleep, dimm screen and turning screen off after idle. The screen stays always on, but no freezes afterwards. I read somewhere on this forum (or wiki), how to do it, cause in settings it's problematic, but I can't find the article now. Also I found out, that my pinebook (with KDEneon) can't use video acceleration after wake up from suspend.

(reposting this here in case 'quick reply' was the wrong place)
HELLO and thanks for the replies. I apologize the the lack of response, but 1) this is a side project for me, and 2) I wanted to get some evidence before I asked for more help.
In particular, I wanted to collect the output from dmesg and /var/log/syslog from more than one incident.
I ended up collecting the last 80-100 lines of output from syslog and dmesg after each of 8 freezes. The last one happened after I executed 'pkcon refresh' and 'pkcon update' and restarted -- sorry, jezek.)
The following lines appeared consistently at the end of syslog and dmesg:
from dmesg:

I don't have the background to interpret any of this, but I'm hoping someone else does.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance, R.M.

Hiya, I am on:
DISTRIB_ID=neon
DISTRIB_RELEASE=18.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=bionic
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="KDE neon User Edition 5.16"
on the Pinebook (not the 1080p) and seem to have similar issues.
When logged on to kdeshell the windows environment hangs while using some apps for a while.
When the windows environment hangs, I am able to switch to the virtual consoles, e.g. tty2 via ctrl-alt-F2-F6, and log in e.g. to have a look at syslog but haven't been able to find sth usefull yet (need to look further).
What I wondered though if in your case your KDE neon has totally crashed or are you also able to still login via virtual console or ssh (if on)|?
Cheers.
rookieone
p.s. I am also looking for a way to recover without rebooting, which I just did, but I need to verify what I have done exactly
I have this information about my system:
Operating System: KDE neon 5.16
KDE Plasma Version: 5.16.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.61.0
Qt Version: 5.12.3
Kernel Version: 3.10.105-bsp-1.2
OS Type: 64-bit
Processors: 4 × AArch64 Processor rev 4 (aarch64)
Memory: 1.9 GiB of RAM
Like rookieone, I can drop into a console when the GUI freezes. I was able to get the captures of syslog and dmesg, but after that the only thing Ii knew how to do followed by a restart 'shutdown now' followed by a restart via the power button.
My earlier response contained samples of error sequences that were consistent in eight freeze incidents. As I wrote last time: I have no idea how to interpret them, but I'm hoping someone else does.
Thanks again, R.M.
Guys, the KDE Neon build is very outdated and the kernel it ships with is no longer supported. There are so many other solid alternatives out there now ... I suggest you grab Manjaro KDE (probably best) or Armbian and don't look back.

Last I checked, none of them has working video HW acceleration.

So far, what I've found is that if I use the commands above to update or install packages on my machine instead of using the Discovery application, my machine doesn't freeze up. It's been 12 hours and counting without issue so far.
