Thanks, fernando_c_m. I updated and rebooted. so now, for output there's "internal speaker" (works when i do the test but not when I make a voice call) , "Internal earpiece" and "headset". I can only hear something when i plug in a wired headset, so I used it to check my voicemail. At the prompt for code I tried to enter it, but the numbers don't go through, even though it shows the numbers on my phone, and so i cannot check my voicemail. I am stuck between a good sms mobile (Pine phone), and a good voice mobile (Nokia N9), but can't seem to have both. I know Mobian is capable of it all because there WAS a sweet spot when everything worked. Just wonder what I did, or did not do since then that's causing this....

If you value stability, I would suggest only updating when a-way announces a new stable reference image.

By the way, today "Dummy O" was there initially, then somehow something morphed, (and under the cover of my pine phone was again emitting crackling noises...did I mention that yesterday?) and then the 3 options are back. still no regular voice call sound, but sms, internet and all are working.
My Brave Heart phone is running on the last stable Mobian release fairly dependable, That's my daily driver.
My PMOS phone is running Nightly Sept 23, it sends SMS text but does not receive, it has inconsistent audio problems.

Since I last post moments ago, (where I purged the Authenticator that I had never used but was on my UBport CE pine phone, and therefore I did not reinstall) I'm happy to report my phone call abilities have returned. I have to note that when I first tried to call out I had to manually change it from "default" to "phone call" for it to work. After I hung up, I checked and saw that the configuration had gone back to "default." and watching this in setting, I used another phone to call my pine phone. Pine phone rang. I picked up. said something. Hung up. looked at Setting, the Configuration had switched to "phone call." Worthy of note is that in the past when I test in such proximity there'd be very loud echos. Today it is all normal sounding. Yay! The "headset" option is no longer there, back to "internal speaker" and "internal earpiece".
So, the Nightly Sept 23. on the UBPort CE seem back to normal. my texts work both ways, too.
Thank you, Team!

My PMOS phone is running Nightly Sept 23, it sends SMS text but does not receive, it has inconsistent audio problems. You might have to clear your modem through CLI to keep receiving sms. When someone sends you mms messages the modem receives them but Chatty can’t process them so they sit in limbo on your modem and plug it up. After about seven or eight mms messages are received it only allows outgoing texts to work.
https://gitlab.com/mobian1/issues/-/issues/89 <— there is the fix for that issue. I’ve had to do it a couple times on Mobian so far

@ LMalilil
You were correct,
But I used 'Modem Manager' to empty out the cache.
Cleared out what appeared to be 10 mms
Then after a restart about 50 texts poured into the sms text app
> I had just flashed the Sept. 25 nightly release to sd card and still had no incoming text, so that told me you were correct.
Since the problem persisted across a completely new operating system.
(a GUI user fix)
Thanks

With recent update, I observed several improvements in Mobian. One of them is improved user experience for auto brightness control. Previously, if this option was active, the screen brightness got to 0% in several seconds. Now the auto control is a bit jumpy, but fully functional. Needless to say, with this change, the battery life is also greatly improved.
