More Apps!
#1
Now I have settled for Postmarket OS (for the time being), I want to look a bit deeper into it and am currently reading the Wiki here:

https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Main_Page

Specifically (and for quick, satisfyning results), I can recommend this page:

https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/CoreApps

Core Apps have been developed to work on small screens, but perhaps not not as small as the Pinephone. Some need more adjusting. Still, they look very impressive.

Navit used to work well for navigation on touchscreens and resource constrained devices. I don't think it's packaged for pmOS yet though.

Another extremely useful program/app that I have used over the last 20+ years of Unix/Linux support jobs is the text mode browser, lynx, which is available from the Postmarket repository.

Besides being a tool for quick text views of web pages (no javascript, or other obscuring add-ons to hide the core text), it makes an excellent file browser in a terminal session. Unfortunately it seems the version available from the Postmarket repo is seriously crippled in that it does not allow setting the option to view "dot" files - i.e, hidden from "standard" view with period/dot prefix character, but easily listed in a terminal command line session by using the -a option:

pine64-pinephone:~$ ls -la
total 508
drwxr-xr-x    9 demo     root          4096 Mar  3 21:15 .
drwxr-xr-x    3 root     root          4096 Feb 27 18:31 ..
drwxr-xr-x    2 demo     demo          4096 Feb 27 20:00 .abook
. . .
-rwxr-xr-x    1 demo     root            90 Mar  7  2019 .xsession
-rw-------    1 demo     demo        304979 Mar  3 21:27 .xsession-errors
-rw-------    1 demo     demo        135168 Feb 27 20:06 .xsession-errors.old
-rw-r--r--    1 demo     demo          7190 Feb 26 19:33 dialer.log

Guess I will be looking around for an ARM version without that restriction to copy over...

@pinerokc, note that Lynx comes from the Alpine repositories, not the postmarketOS repositories. postmarketOS is just a single repository on top of the standard Alpine repos with a nifty image builder and development tool Wink

I find it interesting that you find Lynx excellent for anything on a phone, using a terminal on such a device isn't too much fun.

Note that Alpine developers love contributions, so you can try to fix the upstream package yourself and submit your improvements!

As I recall from dealing with this dot files issue in the past that, as a configuration option setting, it seems to have been made inaccessible per a developer's or distribution maintainer's  view of what constitutes appropriate security since dot files often are used for configuration settings/info.

As a sys admin (before I retired) working most of my time with terminal sessions on servers, it has been a hugely helpful management tool, when I can view all files from within a text mode full-screen browser such as Lynx, so maybe "ordinary" users on terminals really should be blocked from seeing such files if they don't even know about "ls -a", but I think if they do know about such files, and want or need to see them, then any tools that facilitate that should not hinder them in doing so.  Not sure though if I want to invest the time/effort in getting into that "philosophical discussion" with the Alpine maintainers, and/or put the effort into finding out how to re-compile a private version of lynx with that feature enabled.  In contrast, the lynx I use on Linux Mint (presumably using an upstream version from Debian/Ubuntu), and Rasbian on Raspberry Pi have no such restriction, although I usually have to manually set the config option for it on.

As for my terminal use on the phone with postmarketOS (pmOS), I found that useful for "following along" with the discussions here over the last few weeks for resolving various issues on the PinePhone, as well as enhancing it.  I have done most such terminal-based work though from an SSH session on my Linux PC so I have a large screen and full keyboard to do such work.

I wrote a mobile interface for gopass and it should work for those using pass provided you configure gopass properly:

https://git.sr.ht/~anjan/mobpass

It works with phosh!

Maybe maintaining a list of good apps to install on the postmarketos wiki might be useful. For now, I have found the following list to be helpful in finding projects to contribute to: https://mglapps.frama.io/

Cool work on mobpass! Please make a merge request to https://gitlab.alpinelinux.org/alpine/aports to get it into the Alpine (and thus postmarketOS) repositories!
