Linux distro that will work with Kodi?
#1
I was trying to put together a self contained kodi box (pine NAS box  Big Grin ) with three internal hard drives and I am having a hell of a time with it. LibreELEC is a no go because libreelec do not support the PCIe or wireless mod. I thought the ubuntu 18.04 minimal might be the way to go because I could build kodi on top of it but that did not work due to missing dependencies that would not install. I had the same thing happen in mate and armbian.  Are there any of the current Linux builds for rockpro64 that will support kodi? Would Manjaro work? Debian? Am I out of luck right now with the development in its early stages?

thanks! Smile

I am using the Ayufans Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic Minimal 64bit (arm64) [microSD / eMMC Boot] [0.8.3] on an SD card.

When you install kodi (sudo apt install kodi), this is what Ubuntu says:

Reading dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kodi : Depends: kodi-x11 (< 2:18.4+git20190831.2224-final-0bionic.1~) but it is not installable
Depends: libshairplay0 but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have broken packages.

What can I do to fix it  Wink Thanks

btw it give the same message on the mate build too. I am about to try Manjaro to see what happens. Thanks for your help on this I am still learning Linux but I love it Smile

An option might be to run libreelec and omv in docker containers

thanks! would that get the wireless mod and PCI card working?

It sounds like it might be complex to do. Is there a tutorial that could point me in the right direction?

I don't think that there's tutorial, but definitely it should be somehow possible to run libreelec, but how? well, idk Smile

Ayufan thank you for the wonderful software work you are doing with the rockpro64! Do you think you might be able to update your Ubuntu's builds to work with kodi in the future?

In the meantime I may scrap my current plans for the RP64 and maybe make it a small NAS unit or shelve it for a few months until there is more development. My only other current option for the type of "affordable" SBC self contained kodi media center is to use the Odroid H2, which is sold out. I am throwing snake eyes on this build so far.

I will try the Debian build by Mrfixit2001 before I throw in the towel on it first  Smile

Hi, the LE build supports PCIe cards. I have a NVM SSD connected via a PCIe card and it works with LibreElec without any problems.

What PCI Express card do you have? There were some reports, that the Pine card causes some trouble. Check out the following thread: https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?...1#pid43881

I am using the Shinestar card (https://www.amazon.com/SHINESTAR-Profile-Controller-Expansion-Non-Raid/dp/B07RHPMH3C/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=shinestar+4+sata+card&qid=1568608585&s=electronics&sr=1-3). This card works well with most of the distros released so far for the rock64pro board and I using it now with OMV without issues.  the problem is getting Kodi to work with the distros. I gave up and made a NAS unit out of the rock64pro board. For the self contained unit with kodi I will probably wait until the Odroid H2s are back in stock. Thanks for the thread link I will check it out for future reference

Oh,  wow, THANK YOU..

I've been tearing my hair out till I found this thread!   This should be a NO BRAINER, why would LibreELEC even publish a release that couldn't mount a SATA drive?

I just poked all the buttons at the PINE store figuring they were all gonna work together without issue..  Go figure.

Like SBCroak, I just figured the NAS case/ROCKpro64 combo was a natural for a stand alone media server..  How could it NOT be?  ;-)

Guess I'll poke at amazon.   Will report back here on success failure.

Thanks again for something google-able that explains my symptoms!!   (/dev/sda with ubuntu, no-love-for-you with LirbreELEC)
