is it going to be possible to run this off of battery power?

You can run anything from batteries if you work the problem enough. 240AC-only appliance? Get a big enough 12-48v battery and inverter combo. DC appliances? Get a big enough switching regulator (fixed or adjustable).

In the case of the rockpro64, I'm running mine from a solar charged 12v solar setup, and to give it a stable 12v supply it's running from a step up / setup down regulator that ensures that regardless of if the input voltage is above or below the 12v the rockpro64 needs, it gets the stable 12v it needs. And since it's a 10A supply, it should be able to power the 12v side of a 3.5" hard drive or two.

been contemplating how to get a battery into this and at 12v 3a requirements, it makes it difficult to have a self enclosed battery with charging circuit. while I could get a charging circuit for cheap the battery itself to be of use would need 12000mAh for 4 per 4 hours of use at 12v and allow for the 3amp drain.

while searching, I found some self contained units for laptops that range from 36,000 mAh for one and 50,000 mAh for another. They cost the same price as well for both units. This is likely a safer bet then building my own battery system.

I would be interested in the list and image of setup myself.  I plan to travel different countries with mine.  sounds like a good solution for me.

I'm curious about what Ah would be ideal for RockPro64, if I would use it for a few hours? I thought about 2600 mAh (in this case the battery would be small enough), but would it be sufficient?

2600mAH may last about 2 hours.

I'm sure a minimal configuration for your use case could squeeze more time.

Just wanted to add that this unit works very well to power the RockPro64. I have a very mistreated unit (80% of original capacity) that I bought three years ago that still powers the RockPro64 with a dozen or so docker containers (mostly idle) for 24 hours starting at 75% capacity. It has a 12v barrel Y-plug so you can plug in the charger without unplugging the battery and a USB plug so you can add additional power to a USB hub for a 2.5" HDD. The charger that came with mine is only ~19whr, but if you aren't pegging the CPU 24/7 and your drive spins down, that is generally enough to allow the battery to stay charged over the long run.

I don't believe the 12v is regulated, so you might have issues when the battery gets toward the lower end, but it's worked well for me for this project (and others).
