None of my Wifi modules work
#1
Hello all.
I am testing out the Rock64 4gb. I've installed the community Ubuntu Mate and Debian, and in both none of my Wifi dongles work.
I've found a lot of threads about this, but don't seem to find a solution.
I've got 4 dongles, none work. Here is what I get from 2 simular ones that I want to use.

With lsusb it finds the dongles:
Bus 004 Device 004: ID 148f:5370 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT5370 Wireless Adapter
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 148f:5370 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT5370 Wireless Adapter

This is what I get with lsusb -t

/:  Bus 05.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci-hcd/1p, 5000M
/:  Bus 04.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci-hcd/1p, 480M
    |__ Port 1: Dev 6, If 0, Class=Vendor Specific Class, Driver=, 480M
/:  Bus 03.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=ohci-platform/1p, 12M
/:  Bus 02.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=ehci-platform/1p, 480M
    |__ Port 1: Dev 2, If 0, Class=Vendor Specific Class, Driver=, 480M
/:  Bus 01.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=dwc2/1p, 480M
    |__ Port 1: Dev 2, If 0, Class=Human Interface Device, Driver=usbhid, 12M
    |__ Port 1: Dev 2, If 1, Class=Human Interface Device, Driver=usbhid, 12M

I downloaded this, but I have troubles getting it to work.

I followed the instructions in the readme file. But when I do make, I get this message at the end.
  LD [M]  /home/rock64/Desktop/ralink_RT5370_linux_driver-master/ralink_RT5370_linux_driver-master/os/linux/rt5572sta.o

Can someone please help me. I've been at it for a few days now. I'm no Linux master, so I don't know what I'm doing.
Thank you.

Hi, which image/kernel version are you running, I think I enabled the driver for this dongle in the latest development kernel...
Come have a chat in the Pine IRC channel >>

Hello, sorry for the late reply.
I've used the images from the Pine64 Installer.
files.pine64.org_xenial-mate-rock64-0.5.15-136-20180102-arm64-sd2emmc.img.xz
files.pine64.org_stretch-mate-rock64-0.5.15-136-20171222-arm64.img

I also updated/upgraded/dist-upgraded.
I'm gathering information for a youtube video, I also had to do a Blender render. This also didn't work in the Community Xenial Mate.
Then I downloaded the Armbian image, and there the Wifi works, and Blender works. But surfing doesn't. So I can't do everyting I need to do to gather all the information.

So if you could help me out with Xenial Mate or Stretch so I can try it there, that would be great.

Thank you.

There are newer 'testing' versions available @ https://github.com/ayufan-rock64/linux-build/releases (currently 0.6.29, which has just had more WiFi related stuff added, but I'm only up to 0.6.25 atm).

Thank you so much.
I installed the ubuntu-mate-desktop onto xenial-minimal-rock64-0.6.29-201-arm64.img.xz
It all works great. Wifi works, Blender works, surfing works. Youtube works only when screen resolution is 720p and also video quality no higher than 720p, but it works great.
There also is no screen tearing anymore.
So great job. This is a lot better than that image from the Pine64 Installer.

Another question.
Is there an easy way to overclock the Rock64? I've got an active cooler above the heatsink, when maxed out it doesn't go above 60°C, so some overlcocking would be nice.
It now is faster than the Rasp 3b+(even when it's overclocked to 1.57Ghz) in Blender, but against the Odroid C2 or Tinker Board it's no match at 1.3Ghz.

Thanks again, have a nice day.

Hello again.

There still is a problem with the Wifi in the newer Linux version.
The wifi sometimes stops working, it doesn't display any networks anymore and looks like the driver stoped working. I have to plug the dongle into another usb port to make it work again.

Also I have experienced a few instabillity problems. Some programs don't work well. Like when I do a video render in Kdenlive it crashes the Melt process(the render process). Also I've had a sudden reboot.

I'm now doing the Kdenlive render with Armbian. Seems to be working ok.

I just wanted to let you know about these problems. If you could help me with overclocking, please let me know.
Thank you.

Greetings,
NicoD
