Can Ping but can't browse
#1
Can't seem to get by this problem on Linux Xenial Mate 104 build. Have had problems on others too. Hoping some Linux experts can point me in the right direction.
1. Etcher image to SD (Samsung EVO Plus 32GB).
2. Boot in Rock64. No changes to the build.
3. Firefox - click icon.
4. Sorry - Firefox has a problem, quit or send message to Mozilla.
5. Applications - Internet - Chromium Browser
6. "Oh snap" window displays. No browsing for you.
7. Terminal - ping google.com, ping pine64.org, ping yahoo.com, ping my router, ping 8.8.8.8, ping 8.8.4.4 - all work till the cows come home.
8. Terminal - apt-get install midori.
9. Terminal - midori - can browse per usual.
10. Run the Firefox and Chromium browsers from the terminal - same error messages but lots of terminal messages. Here they are;

rock64@rock64:~$ chromium-browser

Dunno just got the rock delivered earlier today.
Typing from Chromium but firefox works fine.
https://github.com/ayufan-rock64/linux-b...m64.img.xz

Etcher -> eMMC but that should make no difference.

Code:
sudo apt-get update -y
sudo apt-get install linux-rock64 -y

should return

linux-rock64 is already the newest version (0.5.10).

Please try the latest non "pre release" image for Rock64.  Firefox should work fine;  you may have to do some things to get Chromium to work;

If midori works, its not a networking problem.

Pretty sure I'm running the 0.5.10 but will check. Currently playing with the Artful image on another SD card. Will also check out the latest pre-release. Thanks for the tips. I'll report back.

Use this link please:

atm it will pull up 0.5.10;   the point being that whatever the latest non "pre release" is, that link will point to it.

Borked the image so I pulled down the 118 armhf Xenial Mate image and started fresh. Am running the 0.5.10. Same results, still no joy with Firefox or Chromium but Midori works.

Try it again;  this time don't update it.  Does Firefox or Chromium work (before) you update ?

I had no probs with the 64bit Arm version of mate and also managed a xorg lxde working image.
Gone a bit image blind and would have to try to give you a definitive answer.

With lubuntu-core I needed to got artful or backport just 2 debs to get it going.

Just tried
artful-minimal-rock64-0.5.13-130-armhf.img.xz
and it works!
The exclamation mark is that lubuntu-qt-core works and typing from Chromium for this message.
lubuntu-qt-desktop is prob a better option.
Kind of looks quite good also found my usb headset and got audio through that.
Which has been a first.

So guess its just a matter of the above image.

Code:
sudo apt-get update -y
sudo apt-get install lubuntu-qt-desktop

Chromium works for me on that build too. Firefox not so much, same error.

Mark - The Mate testing I did was with the virgin 118 load which is Ayufan's latest-release and both the browsers didn't work out of the box. Added Miidori and I was browsing. Not sure I'm going to spend anymore time on the Xenial Mate build. Seemed slower, "laggy" compared to Artful and even the i3 build. I guess that would be the Mate overhead?

Yeah many of the pre-release are buggy and some don't work, Artful is the other way round and having great success with the new Lubuntu-QT-Desktop on armhf.
Guess I could of added additional-architecture with multiarch on the arm64 as no arm64 repo yet for lubuntu-qt-desktop.

Ubuntu Artful 17.10 final release — October 19th

Only a couple of weeks but its practically all there (didn't really hit any bugs) the default qupzilla browser is freaking fast but just installed chromium no probs.

That lubuntu-qt is far more responsive than mate and prob would make a great Rockbook OS.

With the releases it always the release version currently 0.5.10 or 188 but guess artful must be new and the auto-build has dropped them into release version as they don't work.
Its only the artful img and they seem to be working great from pre-release 0.5.14 133 whilst most do not.
