Replacement battery for PinePhone?
#1
I left my PinePhone in a drawer too long and now the battery is almost completely dead.

I don't have an external battery charger and if I connect a wall charger to the phone, the battery charges for a few seconds then tries to boot and dies after a few seconds tries to boot again, diess, over and over.

I did an amazon search on the replacement models in the wiki and the one I bought turned out to be about 6mm short in bothe diemension. Is there a specific battery that I can buy on amazon that will work in a PinePhone?

Is there a way to keep the PinePhone from trying to boot before the battery is charged enough to boot and run with a charger connected by USB?

Try booting from JumpDrive and then leave it to charge.

I have an original (or at least it claims to be original) Samsung EB-BJ700CBE as a spare battery for my PinePhone and it fits exactly. Not sure how you ended up with a too small battery. If it does not fit the PinePhone, it will not fit the Samsung model that it claims to fit either.

To get the original battery to charge, there is also a minimalist charging-only version of JumpDrive (with the USB "jump drive" code disabled, just initializing the minimum to initiate charging).

the emergency tourist solution is to sacrifice a USB cable and strip the red and black, realistically use the voltmeter to be sure of polarity, the 3.7v li-ion will safely take 5v, give it maybe five minutes and be sure about polarity.  that will be enough to get you to normal charging.

I was unable to locate a Samsung EB-BJ700CBE so I did an amazon search on that and the other suffixes on the Pine wiki. None of the hits mentioned BJ700CBE, so I just made what I thought was my best guess, which didn't work out. I was unable to get dimensions from the listings.

I was able to get the charging only jumpdrive image (github is a PITA for this) an that worked. After leaving it charging for over a day, I unplugged, removed the cover, removed the battery and SD card,
replaced the battery and cover, and replugged USB charger.

It booted! The battery was at 27%. After almost 3 hours after boot it is only at 52%, so I think I still urgently need a replacement, so I need a pointer to a model number known to work and preferably available on amazon or other US based supplier that is not ebay.

The compatible models are documented here: https://pine64.org/documentation/PinePhone/Battery/
EB-BJ700BBC
EB-BJ700BBE
EB-BJ700CBE
EB-BJ700CBU
and of course any third-party batteries designed to replace those Samsung originals. Those are all for the Samsung Galaxy J7 2015. (WARNING: There was a 2016 version of the J7 with a different-sized battery.)

Any other models are likely to not fit.

According to PolarCell (one of the third-party manufacturers making compatible batteries), the dimensions should be 76 × 63 × 4 mm.

I do not know many US-based retailers/distributors, but Walmart appears to have several fitting models in their marketplace, such as this one (the cheapest – brand claims are contradictory and potentially misleading though, claims to be an original Samsung, but says "Brand: LEOM"):

(They are sold by third-party merchants, same as on the Amazon marketplace.)

In the old days on the Maemo talk boards (Nokia Linux N series ie N900)there was a battery testing thread and Polarcell won out for years(until testing ended) after the Scud brand stopped being good.

Unfortunately for the OP, PolarCell does not ship to the USA, neither through their website nor through amazon.de, and they do not have any resellers.

(They do ship to most of Europe though, so for European users, it is a good option.)

The 2015 tip was key.

Thanks!
