An early xmas present: 6.1 kernel

With 6.1 it won't boot, with 5.15 it does boot, with the help of a diy'd debug cable to be able to actually see and use the U-Boot menu.

Is this release supposed to be compatible with the PineTab as well or just PinePhone?

I can confirm the failing boot on PineTab (https://paste.debian.net/1267307/). Sometimes (mybe every 3rd try) it can boot 6.1.

Installing 5.15 kernel is a good fix, I took this one: https://gitlab.com/mobian1/devices/sunxi...pe=archive

(I was in a store and the phone started screaming "F*** MICROSOFT!" uncontrollably, to the amusement of both people in the vicinity and my caller. (That's my ringtone taken from a "Space Force" episode on Netflix.) Had to power the phone down to stop it.

This happens even after another installing another 6.1 update that was available today. The problem does not occur when running on the 5.15 kernel, so I've reverted back to that for now.

The notes for Calls v44.alpha.1 says one of the changes is to "**Really** fix endless ringing bug", perhaps in response to #543.

So maybe the endless ringing has more to do with an old bug in the application rather than the kernel, though it sure seemed like it only happened with 6.1. (Of course that may have been a coincidence.)

I see there's another update to the 6.1 kernel available now so I'll give it another try and see how it goes.

Well, first time I booted the phone on the updated 6.1 kernel it shortly locked up solid and had to be forced down by holding the power button in. So back to the 5.15 kernel for now.

I've been on the 6.1 kernel exclusively since Dec 18, or about 5.5 weeks.  I've had 3 fail-to-wake in that period, which is an improvement (and maybe a coincidence) but the 7 spontaneous reboots is an increase.  I'm not sure which is worse, but both are likely to hinder general acceptance of the product.  The frustrating thing is the lack of ability to debug the issues.

Anyhoo, I noticed that when upgrades trigger initrd rebuild, it's only 6.1 that gets done, even though I still have 5.15 installed.  What do you see when you're upgrading on 5.15 with 6.1 installed?  If it's rebuilding initrd for only the newest kernel it seems like that might eventually lead to problems for those using the older one.

Ah, now I know it's not just me Smile

Don't need to install 5.15, since 6.1 wouldn't boot I didn't get a chance to do a cleanup, so 5.15 is still there. Just have to hook up the diy'd debug cable to be able to access the boot menu.

By default, only the initrd gets rebuild for the newest kernel. With
Code:
update-initramfs -k <version>
you can specify which initramfs version needs to be rebuild and IIRC <version> can also be 'all'.

Check the help for update-initramfs before doing anything to make sure though

Latest 6.1 update seems to be more stable, at least no crashes so far but still need to test functionality.

-----------------------------------

UPDATE a day later:

Looks like I spoke too soon!

Have now experienced a few crashes, one when booting up the phone froze at GUI login, another time it crashed during a call, and just now it crashed in the middle of shutting down (GUI shutdown visible and frozen). So back again to 5.15 for now...

the funny part is: it will boot in 1 of 50 cases.
