Troubleshooting and Understanding MMS

No recent updates here. Anyone had any luck in the past couple of weeks? I see my Signal app is going to drop SMS support...

I don't have Verizon to test with but if I understand right you have the same problem as me (SMS/MMS works perfectly only with certain limited APN but that same APN does not work perfectly with data connection?)
Earlier on this thread there was succesfull MMS APN setups for Verizon

If you want to try this (I am quite sure that it will work with all OS if you are using Phosh)
https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=17454

It will switch to MMS APN when you lock the screen and when you unlock and start using phone it will switch to DATA APN.
It is ugly and bad but working -> and because you don't get internet notifications on suspend the difference to "normal" is quite minimal.

Hope I understand your issues correctly.
Edit. Oh sorry - your issue might be different Big Grin
I have tried MMS with three different carriers and the difference between working and not working APN configuration might be really really small.

I haven't really tried anything other than the update and hope that one of the updates fixes my problems method, but alas my MMS woes continue. It's a real bummer about Signal as I thought that it was a good feature (I had silence on my Android, before this phone, and it worked well for text messages -- both encrypted and unencrypted.)

MMS is working in general.  What specific problem are you having?

I don't receive MMS (group or messages with images, audio, or video) even if I have APN set to vzwapp or vzwinternet.

My most detailed reports are on this thread at https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?...#pid111651 and https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?...#pid111806

My workaround is detailed on https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?...#pid112068

Sorry if someone mentioned this before/or this was known before but I noticed that you asked earlier in this thread detailed mms config from a user whose mms settings works in Verizon.
Then he/she posted config details from: /home/user/.mms/modemmanager/mms
AFAIK the recommended way to set mms settings is via Chatty and System settings. If you edit this /home/user/.mms/modemmanager/mms directly you have to first stop mmsd-tng and or chatty - otherwise it will not work.

I am not best expert but I've struggled quite a lot with mms settings and tried three different operators and what I can tell is the difference between what works and what doesn't can be really small. Eventually I found working setting for all three.
(This post is based on the assumption that there are Verizon users who can send and receive MMS on Pinephone xD)

I appreciate this, but, yes, I have both tried changing the settings in Chatty and system settings as well as stopping mmsd-tng and then editing .mms/modemmanager/mms

In fact, I just checked my phone right now and:

Chatty

MMSC = http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms
APN = vzwapp

Settings

APN = vzwapp

(no flood of MMS, which I know I should be getting because I can see they are received via Verizon's Web app.)

I am not ruling out that I have some really small thing misconfigured, but right now I know not what that is.

At any rate, I appreciate the help!

Things might be different in other countries but in Finland you can only download MMS message once. After the first download your carrier will delete the message (at least in Finland).

So I assume that it is same in all countries so if you want to check does it work you need to remove that workaround thing. (I assume that it is the one what is downloading the message from cell towers and when that happens once it will be deleted - at least in Finland Big Grin)

Have you reviewed log messages from modemmanager and mmsd-tng when they're initializing for any obvious signs of trouble?

Somewhere in the middle of it you should see something like this:
Code:

mmsdtng[889]: ../src/service.c:mms_service_set_mmsc() service 0x55880a3e70 mmsc http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms

In my case, I'm on Verizon in the US. My next thought is to try running Waydroid and installing Verizon's own Messages+ app. They claim it'll work over WiFi. What OS is currently the easiest to install Waydroid?
