A point of comparison would be to look at how fast apps start up on the Raspberry Pi since it has similar limitations with regards to CPU, though a much slower SD interface and less RAM at least for the old ones. I haven't done desktop on a Raspberry Pi that much, but from memory apps took a while to start just like on the PinePhone (memory says comparable). Now, I should note, I have a convergence PinePhone which has slower eMMC than non-convergence and I also have full encryption on my partition which slows things down a bit further.
