cryptocurrency on mobian/pinephone
#31
I was going through the wishlist on the Mobian wiki for things available on flatpak; with auto-scaling I tested both Monero and Electrum(Bitcoin) wallets, both work. I didn't try any of the side stuff like mining functions or generating a new wallet as I am not really familiar with the software and protocols. The fonts are really small with scaling but they seem to run fine. What cryptos do pinephone users want/need a wallet for on their phone? Another option is to run the CLI for the crypto wallets which support that.

Transaction fees are relatively high for small purchases and vary depending on how long you are willing to wait for confirmation (10 minutes to 1 hour).

I was an early participant, but the open ledger blockchain always bothered me, even at $30/BTC I considered my easily mined horde of 30 coin more of a liability than an asset were I to use them.  I suppose at over $1M I might now want to somehow sell out of that position even to get a better crypto but I never foresaw the stupid speculation that occured so I wiped the failing disks and flash media with my keys, oops, no $$$ for me.
Back on topic, better cryptocurrencies that are not scamcoins, pyramid scams, anti-privacy coins, or run by a corporation for profit are out there, scaling can be fixed as can the other problems but it requires a team of devs who are principled and probably anonymous to not be easily pressured to turn against the hodlers and miners.
I was a holder yet a non-believer early on, now I just want a privacy replacement for credit cards, cash and paypal; no speculation, just money I can easily and privately spend on dinner, airline tickets, or electronic components.
A privacy friendly currency would be great.  But BTC isn't it, (securities used for massive investment are not suitable currencies)

I totally get your point about Bitcoin not being practical for daily stuff because of the weird fee changes and slow confirmations. I messed around with Monero for a bit on my PinePhone and liked how focused it is on privacy, but the mobile wallet scene for some newer cryptos can be kind of hit or miss with support or updates. Usually, I just want something that's easy enough to pay for small things and keeps my info private, without crazy speculation or corp control. If you're into newer projects, there’s a lot happening with Solana-based tokens lately, especially since there’s tech like automated volume booster for solana tokens making trading more accessible. That could be fun to explore if you want something fast and not stuck in the old scaling issues.

While I hate piping or holding large amounts cryptocurrency through website based services you can keep most of your value in say litecoin(have to compile the electrum wallet or use the CLI wallet) or monero then shoot it to a website for the approximate amount you are spending to then make a payment, then make a webapp for that service.
