Yes, it could be promising as a mini laptop with built-in telephony. Otherwise, I don't think I can justify carrying such a large device after coming from a sub 4.5 inch phone. Pinning my hopes on an early release of the keyboard accessory.
There are few NEW Android or Apple phones available now with less than 5-inch screens, aside from some very basic models, or that cool 3-inch Verizon "Palm" phone that may be available by now with a GSM variant direct from Palm, or on eBay (although poor battery life due to its small size). From what I have seen there will be trade-offs between size, price, and capability.
The PinePhone is comparable to mid-range non-flagship phones, about equivalent to flagship models of 2-3 years ago, aside from the new-fangled skinny form factor (not a fan of that myself, but I can tolerate it if the functions and price are "reasonable"). Belt holsters work for me to carry these 5+ inch phones, as I don't like much of anything in a pocket bigger that a few coins anyway ;-)
Good luck...
