@xyzzy I also considered buying a small serial to USB board. But, one thing held me back was the power. I wanted a board that allowed the USB side to supply power to the serial to USB chip. Due to challenges this last year, I have not pursued either the pre-built mod or custom small / daughter board.
Note that RS-232 is really plus & minus voltages, (generally >5v & <-5v. With ours being 0v to 3/3.3v, what we have is not really RS-232. But your meaning is understood.
