The hard case likely offers more protection in the event of a drop, but there is no lip surrounding the front of the phone.
To protect the screen, buy a tempered glass screen protector - be aware that screen protectors sold by PINE64, or sold for the compatible iPhone XS Max, will exhibit air bubbles.
Thanks - looks like the soft case with the screen protector is the way to go. I have the same kind of thing on an old 1st-generation Samsung Nexus running CyanogenMod I was given that I've been using just as a camera. The screen protector has a few bubbles but after a while they were not noticeable unless I thought to look for them.
