Something tells me it's a Pinebook Pro.
Sounds like the desktop session is dying while it's trying to start up. Hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to a virtual terminal and see if you can log in on console. (Ctrl+Alt+F7 to go back to X11, i.e. the desktop.)
Read through the various log files in /var/log/. Find the lines marked with the time of your login attempt, one or more of the files will likely report what's dying.
Also, have you used this PBP before? If so, try to remember what you changed last time you were on.
