What you could also try is, changing to a terminal (I'm guessing you end up on the login) with CTRL + ALT + F3 or another F-Key except F7.
and try to login as root from there using the old, new and default passwords.
Maybe you just have a screwed up keymap, type your password as you normally do in the user field or attach a usb-keyboard and try again. This happened to me a few times actually. :/
