Its true. Computer companies can only stay in business if they produce a product which cannot be produced by a 13 year-old kid in his mother's basement.
Almost anyone can build a Sparc server (equiv), or Sparc workstation (equiv), from off-the-shelf parts and free OS in a weekend. Although not too many folks can build a server farm like Watson, or Blue Gene, any time soon for any amount of money let alone off-the-shelf parts.
Sparc was a cool little box (twenty years ago) but its time has come; and frankly speaking, my rock64 is cooler !
