The Magic Remote works like a wireless mouse. It communicates with the TV using RF (radio frequency) at 2.4GHz.
A wireless mouse comes with a USB dongle that you attach to your computer.
For the Magic Remote, this USB dongle functionality is embedded in the TV.
Therefore, it is difficult to capture the RF transmission of the Magic Remote.
It is difficult as in http://samy.pl/keysweeper/
For some TV models, there is a special LG USB dongle that is meant to attach to the LG TV in order to use the (new version?) Magic Remote,

Perhaps these new Magic Remotes have additional functionality like a microphone so they need the LG USB dongle.
If you have that LG USB dongle, then it might be detected as a pointing device by Linux.
Connect it to a Linux computer and send back the kernel logs. My Magic Remote is of the old style ;-(.
