Bill, you have an impressive Linux background and have been very successful with the Pinebook Pro over the years. Debian 12 with MATE is a great choice for PBPs today – lightweight, stable and better supported than Manjaro. You should update the firmware, especially Tow-Boot and the keyboard/trackpad, to improve performance. The sleep/wake issue is still common but not a problem if you don’t need it.
