Things might be different in other countries but in Finland you can only download MMS message once. After the first download your carrier will delete the message (at least in Finland).
So I assume that it is same in all countries so if you want to check does it work you need to remove that workaround thing. (I assume that it is the one what is downloading the message from cell towers and when that happens once it will be deleted - at least in Finland
)
