Handwriting recognition?

Will the PineNote have handwriting recognition software?
it would be useful if it could do something like Palm Pilot graffiti or like Windows PocketPC 3 ways to recognize handwriting. This would replace the need for a keyboard for my use.

From the PR https://www.pine64.org/2021/08/15/introd...-pinenote/ :

If you’re looking to buy a PineNote in the first batch, you must expect to write software for it, not to write notes on it.

That said, it will be technically capable of this functionality, it will just take time for somebody to develop.

If you look around on maemo you shroud find FOSS graffiti input for the older QT based Maemo5 linux.
Here it is: https://garage.maemo.org/frs/shownotes.p...se_id=3531

Palm had to change their system because of patents.  The field is rather full...

Actual HWR is a pain.  A neural network accelerator on the pinetab could help, but the training set would need send off somewhere else (cloud, attached machine).

And then there's what *I* want:  Draw a box with my lousy, caffeine-shaky hand and have it turn into a box.  Add cross-lines and have those be snapped to the box, guessing that I want them equally-spaced.  And then add text in the boxes by writing.  After the fact (for me, others may want immediate) wrap the text sensibly while expanding the boxes sensibly.  So a technical sketching tool.

Not at all PineNote-specific, but I'd prefer a non-glowing screen for this work.  Color would be great (DES slurry), but, ya know.

https://excalidraw.com/ might be what you want? I guess a local version could be made to run on the Pinenote.

Seems close, thank you!

But I'd love to sketch a box with my poor skills and have a chunk of software decide I meant to sketch a rectilinear box.  The "neuro" processor could help.  Some student almost certainly could pull a few publications and a thesis out of this...

Making it look hand-sketched but not as lousy as my hand sketching would be a bonus.  Wink

And now that I think on it... The GPU seems quite overpowered for an electronic ink display. The excess also could be repurposed to support relatively quick interaction. hm.

I'm still looking for good FLOSS HWR, possibly https://github.com/githubharald/SimpleHTR , and so far tinkered with OCR e.g Tesseract. It's terrible https://twitter.com/utopiah/status/1321152581717078017 but feasible even on less powerful hardware.

On "boxier" boxes I had similar discussion on Inkscape and there is some work e.g https://inkscape.org/~qpad/%E2%98%85shape-recognition which ironically enough does not demand anything fancy, namely that if you have a certain type of curve, basically something close enough according to your threshold, to a line then you remove the number of points. If you do it properly it will flatten it. You can also go the ML way with shape recognition from a catalogue of shape though or mix the two.
