Speaker idea

The speakers in the pbp could use, well, a subwoofer maybe.  I don't know where you'd put one.  To look at the picture they look like ordinary small speakers like you might find in a radio.  Recent advances like neodymium magnets have made big sound from a small space possible, but they're best used in some environment designed for them, not just stuck in there.  Some plastic or fiberglass housing, I remember it's important that sound waves coming off the front of the speaker not reach the back and cause interference and partial cancellation.  A cardboard box is better than nothing with bigger speakers.  There is software like qspeakers for trying to optimize designs, not that I've tried it.

What about cell phone speakers?  They aren't very big but some can belt out those ringtones, which are often music clips.  Seems like there must be some surplus ones around since there are millions of cell phones.

Sticking six cellphone speakers under here sounds like a great possibility!

I'm thinking to grab a couple of LG G7 speakers and give the mod a go. The housing will be an issue but one step at a time

Are these the same type they put in there? Https://www.amazon.com/uxcell-Repair-Int...eature_div

I thought they were interesting sounding when I heard them. They sound phasey; as if the sound in one speaker is traveling through the case to the other speaker. I'm also curious why an upfiring design wasn't used. That would most certainly make a huge difference. I've heard it is possible to drill holes opposite the speakers and flip them yourself, but I'm too much in love with the aesthetic to do so. I may try to baffle the underside of the speakers somehow and see if that improves things, but I'm afraid of adding heat. ?

We need to get the specifications of the speakers put in the Wiki. I've added that they are oval in design. But actual measurements would be nice.
Here is a link for the technical information;

Wiki - Pinebook Pro - Audio

As usual, feel free to correct, improve or comment, (good or politely bad).

We still need;
  • Size: length, width & height
  • Wattage of the existing model
  • Ohms of the existing model
Ideally we would have a picture of the dynamic range, showing where we get roll-off at the low and high ends.

@8jef has also been experimenting with speaker mods over here: https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=8810 and likely knows these things.

The dimensions are apparently 20x30mm. Not sure about the thickness.

Don't know about the technical specs like the ohms and wattage.

I have a dead Motorola phone here that's open.  The speaker is a little metal bar not much over an inch long and about 1/8 inch wide.  On the inside there's not much that I can find at all.  I'm guessing that the metal bar on the outside replaces the speaker cone and mounts via the voice coil to a fixed surface which mounts to the phone body.  I can hear ring tones 2 rooms away, in particular someone has the guitar riffs from "House of the Rising Sun" and it's almost loud enough to interrupt a conversation.  Sounds decent too for something tiny.  Being on the outside is probably important.  The Amazon ad, no, that looks more like a tiny regular speaker.

I think the speaker that gets used during a phone conversation is different and more conventional.  So I tried searching for cell phone ringer on Aliexpress and some of these look close.  https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?cat...one+ringer  A teardown might include it, I'm probably using the wrong word.  Somebody on XDA should know https://www.xda-developers.com/

I didn't know they were speakers at first  https://imgur.com/a/6VVY7yG

Hi. I've replaced my PBP speakers with these https://www.digikey.ca/product-detail/en...D/5958415/ and documented the venture, if this is of interest to you.

They look similar to some that you found. This is not optimal, but at least I get better sound and a bit more lower frequencies.

I have experimented with various distros on the PB Pro. What I have noticed is that the sound coming from the PB Pro when running the stock Debian 9 image is far better than when running any other distro. The other distros seem to have very low volume. Has anyone else noticed this?

In Manjaro (Applications > Settings > System Settings > Audio) you can boost above 100%.
Don't boost to the max, as it will quickly distort the sound.
