Considering emulation, I see a number of possible solutions.
a) Install Android on the board and then install emulators from the Play Store. There are countless. Is there any Android version that is best? I've seen the "regular" Android 5.x, but also 6.x beta and even 7.x beta.
b) Install RemixOS, which seems to be a good alternative to Android, offering the same possibilities. Or am I mistaken here?
c) Install a Linux distribution and then port RetroPie, RetroArch, EmulationStation or something similar to it. This seems the most flexible and compatible solution, except it looks like a whole lot of pioneering needs to be done.

I can't speak for Linux as I've never tried it on my A64, but I'm happy with my Android emulation setup. I'm using ayufan's 5.1.1 non-TV build, which is rooted, you can install opengapps on (using FlashFire) and then works more reliably than Pine's own 5.1 release. Then get RetroArch from the Play store, and you're away.

Depending on what you want to emulate there's also the question of what controller to use. I got myself a Probox2 Remote+ for Christmas and am pretty satisfied with it for general airmouse use as well as a controller for 4 button games (at a stretch it can be used for 6 button ones, if you remap the volume keys), it's just a shame the mic doesn't want to work with non-probox systems.

Thanks a lot, that is really useful information! I don't care experimenting a little and finding out things by myself, but I wanted to avoid wasting lots of time on something that will never work nicely.

So Android is the way to go! The Probox remote makes me think of the Wiimote, of which I have a few, so I think I will try linking one to the A64. I don't know however if it can also act as an airmouse, but I will find out!
