What is (or was) "libcanberra"?

Question
Hi, I recently got around to upgrading Manjaro and a couple of update prompts made me curious.

Could someone please tell me what libcanberra-pulse and its successor, extra/libcanberra were for?

It seems after my most recent update, these have been removed.

I'd appreciate any insights into what these were, and what made them obsolete.

Thanks in advance.  Smile

Seems the library had something to do with sound. https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Libcanberra

in the link you provide it says that it plays notification sounds, if you click on "Further description here" you are sent to

http://0pointer.de/lennart/projects/libcanberra/

where the last update was on Tue 25 Sep 2012 and it says that it was ported to GStreamer, that is it was probably incorporated into the GStreamer and there is no separate library any more

Thanks Mouffa. That makes sense.
