Rock64 OMV help needed

Hey Everyone, sorry in advanced if this seems overly negative, just fed up


I've been fighting with multiple images of OMV on a Rock64 4GB, both using 16GB MMC & SDHC cards from The Pine Store. & a connected 5TB 7200rpm powered external USB3.1 Gen 1 drive.
I have been using ayufan builds of OMV, both armhf and arm64, various builds and versions.
I've set the devices to never spin the drive down, or to sleep via the WebGUI power settings.

It becomes non-responsive within 24 hours, requiring a power cycle to be usable again. it's connected via gigabit ethernet.

All i want to do is use it with Transmission going through a VPN & to be a network share for media on my network.

I am not talented as bash commands.

Following the Techno Dad Life guides, trying to use the Docker/OpenVPN/Transmission solution, but that locks up the Rock almost immediately.

any advice? because i'm ready to go Office Space on this tiny little board. it won't be satisfying, just a waste of money.

For starters it would be good to get some logs and more details. Good that the scenario is easy to replicate because its reoccurring.
For starters I suggest giving your omv user ssh access to omv and / or enabling root ssh access via the OMV WebGUI.

Here are a few questions that could provide some context:
1) how exactly is the HDD externally powered ?
2) what does it mean exactly that the board becomes unresponsive? (does the power LED stay on? what about the LED indicators ? the Ethernet LEDs ?)
3) if you already have enabled ssh access, have you tried to ssh into the board when 'it becomes non-responsive' ?
4) are you sure that your router doesn't change the boards IP?

Now, its possible that there are some hints in the existing logs which can be found here:
OMV WebGUI -> Diagnostics -> system log

From here grab syslog ; messages ; S.M.A.R.T and pastebin the logs in this thread.

When you encounter the same issue again, try and see if you can ssh into the board. If you can, then do grab dmesg and pastebin it here together with the previously mentioned logs.

I have 5 rock 64's and it took weeks to find an image that would consistently run on all five without either immediately crashing or occassionally crashing.

Out of interest, what image did you end up using? I'm not really having issues with crashing, but having issues with a few different things not working or behaving oddly

i'm going to try this. i will collect logs from then, it seems my setup is just really unstable, the the log files aren't showing my as to why it just becomes unresponsive. SSH will not connect when device has frozen/hang/becomes unresponsive. plugging into a monitor via HDMI shows nothing. only solution is a manual restart of the SBC via front buttons

i've been using the stretch-openmediavault-rock64-0.7.8-1061-arm64 version, or multiple variants
