  Uses for a DoA USB-C dock (disassembly/recycling)
Posted by: kartynnik - 06-14-2021, 03:10 PM - Forum: PinePhone Accessories - Replies (3)

I have received a USB-C docking stick with my Manjaro Community Edition which was apparently dead on arrival (it doesn't show up in dmesg/lsusb and is not recognized under other OS's either). Unfortunately I didn't check it thoroughly at first, attributing the problems to the well-known issues of the PinePhone with regards to USB-C PD and HDMI over USB-C (hardware and software deficiencies). Upon contacting the support now, I was told the dock is out of warranty. I proposed to donate it to Pine64 for recycling/refurbishing but was denied.

1) Has anyone tried to disassemble the item? The aluminum enclosure seems to be very snug.
2) Would anyone be interested in it for experimenting (the item untampered and looking as new)? I can arrange mailing across the US for free.
3) As the last alternative, what would be the best way to dispose of it as e-waste?

  Megi's multiboot sxmo image
Posted by: aithal - 06-14-2021, 06:12 AM - Forum: Sxmo on PinePhone - Replies (1)

The multi boot sxmo image build doesn't have any audio. The audio defaults to none and changing it doesn't work. Is it same for all? I have even tried the sxmo on the arch phosh multi boot image and there is no audio there as well.

Brick Maintained Linux booting from eMMC
Posted by: ootoovak - 06-14-2021, 02:01 AM - Forum: Linux on RockPro64 - Replies (10)

Does anyone know of an actively maintained Linux that works on RockPro64 running off of the eMMC? If so please post in a reply.

I was using Ayufan's Ubuntu before I was concerned about the fact that it isn't well maintained and thus could be vulnerable to security exploits since the last stable release.

I also now feel like I've tried all the version of Linuxes listed on the wiki page and so far only older version of Armbian seems to boot from the eMMC module. Unfortunately, last time I tried to set it up for my use case (as a Docker host) the older version of the Linux kernel stopped progress!

I was hopeful something like SkiffOS using Gentoo would help being custom built but I've run into some walls getting it to build or copy over to the eMMC so I'm stuck there too.

This is a SUPER frustrating experience (in fact most of my Pine64 experiences have been frustrating due to software issues, OS stuff mainly). Short of learning how to build and patch my own Linux (I'm technical but that is well out of my experience) I'm at a bit of loss as what to do.

(Side question: Does anyone else find the Pine64 boards frustrating due to OS support issues?)

In any case please, if you have them, post links or instructions as to how you got an actively maintained Linux booting off of the eMMC for RockPro64 thank you!

  pulseaudio crashing the O.S.
Posted by: Lazy_one - 06-13-2021, 07:39 PM - Forum: PinePhone Software - No Replies

I've had the pinephone a few months now. It is not my regular phone, for me it is just a fun hobby. I've been using Phosh on Arch.

Today was audio play day. I unpacked a few hundred sound files I've collected over the years. Most were wave and I converted them using ffmpeg to ogg.
I played them on my PC and found some froze mpv when playing, so weeded them out.

Now I am starting to play them on the phone and find that not only is pulse spitting an error "Stream error: Timeout" after a frustrating delay, but once I get that error I can not reboot, shutdown or any other admin task. It won't even let me drop down the top bar or login from the login shield.

I've played the files on an updated fresh install. Via the terminal and via ssh.

Quote:pulseaudio -k
pulseaudio: invalid option -- ''
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Failed to parse command line.

killall pulseaudio appears to kill it. But

Quote:pulseaudio -D
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup failed.

After more play, I found Killall will fix the freeze issue of the O.S. and after I can play sound again with occasional extreme delays.

I've tentatively identified the offending sound files, so far all are
vorbis, 8000 Hz, mono, fltp, 22 kb/s

So maybe it's 8000 Hz. I'm going to convert again and specify 22,000 Hz and see how that works.

---------- Edit Below!

It appears to be the issue. I converted over 300 files to ogg with 22,000 Hz bitrate of 64k and made them all stereo to be on the safe side.
Quote:ffmpeg -i input.wav -ac 2 -ar 22000 -b:a 64k output.ogg
They all now play on the pinephone no issue.
Instead of deleting the post because it is resolved, I'll leave it up for anyone with the same issue googling.

My PinePhone shuts down when the screen turns off
Posted by: rvbarreto - 06-13-2021, 05:11 PM - Forum: General Discussion on PinePhone - No Replies

My PinePhone works normally, but when the screen turns off by any reason (inactivity or because I pressed he button on the side), the phone shuts-down immediately. To explain better, as the screen turns-off, the phone seems normal, but when I press the button again, nothing happens for a few seconds, and then the LED turns red, then white and then green. The boot loading screen then appears. I can repeat this indefinitely.

My version:
PinePhone UBports Edition
Ubuntu 16.04
UBports Image Part
20210610-24867
Device Image Part
20210613-8159

What have I done:
- Reset Launcher
- Erase & Reset All
- Updated the OS and all apps.
- "Reinstall all apps"

Details:
I'm not using a SIM card

I would be glad if any one has any clue on how to fix this

Oi Oi good people.

I made this:

Its a bit odd looking as I had to account for a nasty generic case I found on ebay:
https://ebay.us/h771oU (moto g6 play in black)

Also it uses a right angled usb c adapter for the convergence dock:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07M75JXS1/r...UTF8&psc=1

I'm still fighting with the convergence dock at the moment, the only way I can get it to display on a connected monitor is with the OS's in Megi's 17 distro image on a tfcard, or from an un-upgraded os fresh from download, so the right angled adapter might not be a great idea.

Anyway, if you wanted to make your own, here's the SVG's:

My plywood is 3.5mm so that's the length and widths of the tongues and tongue holes (there's probably a better name, but I don't know what it is)

PostmarketOS - Why swap file not on at boot?
Posted by: stozi - 06-13-2021, 11:41 AM - Forum: Linux on Pinebook Pro - Replies (3)

I followed the standard arch wiki way to set up a swapfile, and based on 'Install to disk' in the Alpine wiki, which shows setting up a swap partition the normal way, it should work. It does work if I manually turn the swap file on, but it isn't automatically on at boot. I don't know how PmOS works in that there were no other entries in my fstab, but I guess that has something to do with it. any ideas?

My Experience Using the Pinebook Pro as a Daily Driver
Posted by: warpnow - 06-13-2021, 10:39 AM - Forum: General Discussion on Pinebook Pro - Replies (9)

I didn't buy this laptop because I expected it to replace my chromebook or main laptop. I bought it to experiment with new technology, but I wanted to test to see if I could use it in that way, and here are my findings. I used it exclusively for 2-3 days.

Things I loved.

  • For its price, the keyboard is very nice. Alot of travel. Plasticy feel isn't great but blows away other laptops in price range in my opinion. Keyboard is fairly clicky which I like but some may not.
  • Love all the hardware switches to turn things off.
  • Build Quality feels very good for price point. My other laptops are X1 Carbon & Apple M1 Macbook, so this is lower end at 10% the price, but it s5-6 itill feels good to use.
  • Love the lack of branding on the top of the laptop.
  • Some people complain about the trackpad but its perfectly usable. I like the precise click vs soft touch click of some laptops.
  • I did not find the CPU/RAM limiting with my behavior of hanging out on discord, watching youtube videos, or checking gmail. I also SSHd into a server and did some development on it and was fine. These days, I do all my builds server side so my laptop is basically just an IDE/SSH session.
  • Quiet & Cool Operation
Things I don't like:
  • Battery life is realistically 3-4 hours. Feel like time travel back to the 90s. 5-6 hours really is table stakes. You need better battery life if you want to prove this chip is viable. Current battery life is not viable for a commercial product.
  • Charging of Battery - by far the worst part of PBP.  I feel like I get one use session out of it per day and then I put it on the charger overnight. I haven't even timed the charging because it takes so long. With the laptop on, it stays at 0% forever. If I turn it off, it does charge, but very slowly. The entire time I wrote this it was hooked up and never left 0%m charge.
  • The charging cable is very short, which is not fun as I basically am using the laptop as a desktop given the low battery life and slow recharge.

Am I happy with my purchase as a tech enthusiast testing out a new product? Yes.

Would I buy this as a commercial product or recommend it to someone? No, the battery situation is not just bad its show stopping. You can't take half a day to recharge a battery that discharges before two movies are played in 2021. Its just not viable. I would pay $300 for a PBP with better charing/battery, but I wouldn't pay $200 for it in its current state if it were my main device.
