  Linux support concerns
Posted by: jl_678 - 12-21-2015, 03:35 PM - Forum: Linux on Pine A64(+) - Replies (41)

Hi,

I am a backer and pre-purchased a Pine A64+; my interest is primarily in Linux and I am currently and avid Raspberry Pi user.  However, as I have done further research, I am getting concerned about the Allwinner SoC used on the Pine64.  Specifically, it sounds like Allwinner does a very poor job supporting the open source community and so I am concerned about the quality of the Linux implementation.

Here are some threads talking about it:

<- Started by the folks from Pine
https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/...ard_super/

These threads make me question whether this is the right platform for Linux, and I am hoping to get the perspectives of other backers and/or Pine employees.  Am I wrong in thinking of this as a Linux platform and instead should I focus on it as an Android platform?

Thank you!

  USB 3?
Posted by: ronhd - 12-21-2015, 10:17 AM - Forum: USB 2.0 Ports - Replies (12)

Any chance of USB 3 support being added? Or a USB 3 expansion card?

With such a fast processor, and the gigabit Ethernet option, hobbling disk I/O through a USB 2 interface is really going to kill the overall performance.

Yes, the MicroSD support allows for faster I/O and allows pretty high capacity. But then you're dealing with the limited lifetime of flash -- ~10,000 writes, and with large block sizes, you hit that faster than you'd think, especially with a media center.

Making at least the host controller USB 3 would be a huge performance win.

  Minimum search term length?
Posted by: ronhd - 12-21-2015, 10:06 AM - Forum: General Discussion on PINE A64(+) - Replies (1)

What's up with a minimum search term length of 4 characters? Given the common use of TLAs (three letter acronyms) in the tech industry, it's not that wise.

I would like to search for "USB", to see all USB-related posts, without having to worry about whether someone typed "USB2", "USB3", "USB 3" "USB three"...

  JTAG interface?
Posted by: duane - 12-20-2015, 09:20 AM - Forum: Pine A64 Projects, Ideas and Tutorials - Replies (5)

I am not asking for a connector (that would cost money)

what I am asking for is this:

  • At least Solderable pads that support JTAG
  • Make sure JTAG is enabled (some SoC companies blow fuses to disable JTAG)
  • Access to sufficent docs that are the chip specific JTAG (i.e.: Chain geometry, etc)

Will this be available?

NOTE: I also see there are two JTAG-SEL pins, These need to be "modifiable" by some means.

Option 1: A sufficient solution would be trace on the PCB that can be cut with a razor knife (this would be zero cost) please make these large enough that a human can actually do this.

Option 2: Would be to use some zero-ohm components that can be removed or changed

Also will need documentation about what these pins do, etc - they are not well documented in the existing PDFs on the Pine64 web site (the documents say the pins exist, but do not say what the pins do)

-Duane.

Lightbulb Debian (Raspbian-like)

Please consider a Raspbian-like build from Debian to run on this hardware.

Offer to help with porting Linux OS
Posted by: gregoryfenton - 12-19-2015, 05:00 AM - Forum: Linux on Pine A64(+) - Replies (8)

May I first state that as soon as I heard about this board I backed it immediately. It sounds a lovely piece of hardware.

That said, I have purchased many boards that sound great but fail when it comes to using the board for anything except for the demo software installed. I bet a lot of us have been bitten there.

I would like to offer my experience with SOC to get Linux working on the Pine64 board.
I am familiar with compiling and developing on ARM hardware.
As an example of my work I was the first (only?) person to get the SAMA5D3-Xplained board working with a 4.3 inch LCD TFT display. See http://www.element14.com/community/group...lcd-bundle

I know that a board will succeed or fail depending on how easy it is for others to start using it and I feel that this board deserves more than becoming another one in the pile of "ah well" boards I have.

Linux Kernal Development - BETA Boards
Posted by: jj@pine64 - 12-19-2015, 03:56 AM - Forum: Linux on Pine A64(+) - Replies (70)

If you are a kernal developer, please post here your interest in working with our team and factory to port Linux OS like CentOS, Ubuntu, etc over to PINE64. Please use this thread to post interest in working with beta boards only and if you are available to help expedite the port process.

Thank You

Thanks

When the device is shipping, what development tools will be available to work with it? gcc? c++? make? configure? vim/vi? emacs?

What about scripting languages? Java? Ruby? Python? perl? lua?

Thanks for your time.

  Plans for gaming?
Posted by: JessicaAlba - 12-17-2015, 09:35 AM - Forum: Game Station Emulation - Replies (6)

Hi guys, first off just wanna say I'm extremely excited for this project's completion and it looks like everything is going well with the funds reached 1600%+ of the original goal.

So I just saw this subforum and wanted to ask if any plans were in the works of building/coding a dedicated emulation software for the Pine A64+. I noticed there are no stretch goals for this KS campaign but I think that would be a pretty sweet one if it's not already been planned. My knowledge regards to coding is basically non-existent so even if there were tutorials on how to get started in this regard that would be great.

Also would something like this be possible to do on the preinstalled Android OS or would I have to use Linux?

Thank you for your time!
